From Our Own Correspondent. Valedictory. At the Halcombo school ou Thursday afternoon a number of parents and triends, together with the pnipßs, gathered to bid farewell to Miss Gilbert (assistant mistress). Au apology was received from the chairman (tho Rev. To Punga), who was unablo to attend. Various items were given by tho pupils, and a dainty afternoon tea was served by the senior girls. Mr. E. Long (headmaster), referring to the departure of Miss Gilbert, expressed regret iu losing the services or an efficient and popular teacher, concluding with good wishes for tho future. At a suitable interval, littio Dawn Manage, on behalf of the pupils, presented the guest of honour with a handsome cut glass vase in memory of t'.cr sojourn in Halcombo, while Shirley Porter presented a charming bouquet of violets with best wishes for future prosperity. Miss Gilbert feelingly and suitably responded. Miss Gilbert is commencing duties at St. John’s, Wanganui. Miss Rankin is taking her placo here. Halcombe School’s Euchre Party and Dance. On Friday evening at the school, the fortnightly euchre and dance was held, with a good attendance. Good music was supplied by Miss G. Williams, Miss M. lwikau, and Miss D. Wisknowsky, Messrs. E. Long and party accompany, ing with violins. Messrs. Long and N. Anderson undertook the duties of M.C. At the conclusion of a dainty supper, the results of the euchre tourney were announced. Airs. G. Franklin was pre-'SC-nted with the ladies’ first prize, a charming tabic centre, hand embroidered, donated by Mrs. E. Long. Mr. McNae, of Mongoanc road, annexed the men’s prize, 50 cigarettes, kindly donated by Air. P. Rasmussen. Consolation prizes were awarded to Airs. Schearon and Afr. T. Alilos. ! The secretary (Afr. W. B. Paulding) thanked all present for tho patronage accorded tho committee. A committee meeting will bo held on Wednesday evening in the school, and afterwards the committee, together with the ladies’ committee, will meet to discuss and make arrangements for the coming fancy dress ball. All those interested arc invited to attend.
