Makino

SOCIAL EVENING From Our Own Correspondent. Makino, so well noted for its happy social evenings, was again on Friday the centre of attraction to a large gathering which, assembled at the school to say good-bye to Mr. Hextall and Miss Rankin, who since the beginning of the year have been relieving teachers at the school; also to welcome the new master, Mr. Withers, and Mrs. Withers, as well as Miss McDuff, the newly installed assistant .mistress. The jolly company danced till well after midnight to music contributed by Mrs. Percy Simpson, Mrs. D. O’Keefe (Wellington), Miss Jean Stuart-Moray, Mr. Withers, Mr. George Pilcher (aecordeon) and Mr. Alf. Mitchell. The song, “My Gentle Child.’’ was very sympathetically rendered by Miss Lottie Baker, while a humorous recitation by Mr. W. Hills was much enjoyed. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Before the conclusion of the function Mr. J. Hynes (chairman of the school committee) thanked those present for attending in such large numbers, thereby giving Mr. and Mrs. Withers the opportunity of meeting so many parents of the former’s future pupils, which ■would help to make things so much easier for Mr. Withers.. Mr. Hynes hoped Mr. and Mrs. Withers would remain long in the district. With regard to Mr. Hextall and Miss Rankin, the chairman remarked that during~ their stay in Makino they had carried out their duties with satisfaction to everyone. As they were not going further afield than Haleombe and Dunolly, it was hoped that much more would bo seen of them in the future. The evening concluded with the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” and “Auld Lang Sync.” Personal Among those who journeyed to Makino to attend Friday evening’s social were Mr. and Mrs. D. O’Keefe (Wellington), Miss Doris Smith, formerly assistant mistress at Makino school and now of the Taihape district, and Miss Pennell, of Taihape. Mrs. Percy Simpson is spending the week-end with iriends at Taihape.
