DANNEVIRKE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Fortnightly Meethig From Our Own Correspondent. The fortnightly meeting of tho Dannevirke Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers on Friday evening, when there were present: Councillors C. J. Hansard, deputy Mayor (presiding) L. Stein, A. W. Smith, W. McKinnon, S. McNabb, D. T. Glover, F. W. Smith, W. Dobson, and L. W. Ward. The Works Committee advised having considered the overseer’s report as follows:

Tho committee resolved that proceedings be taken against anyone found taking. flowers from the cemetery, and that the baths be closed on March 31 for the season; recommended that the fencing Tound the station plot be continued. Cr. MoNabb asked if anything was going to be done to the playing area of the domain before the hockey season, as the grass was very long. The deputy-Mayor said it had been arranged to graze stock there, but as the gates were left open, allowing the 3tock to wander, the sheep, had been removed. Cr. Dobson said that he had been approached by a representative of tho hockey association with regard to the removal of the clay cricket pitch on tho outer area.—lt was decided that the deputy-Mayor and the chairman of the works committee confer with the two associations concerned. With reference to a communication from the New Zealand British Motor Manufacturers’ Association, regarding a procession of British motor cars through High street on March 2S, it was resolved that they be given permission to park tho vehicles in the street between 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. A communication was received from tho Postmaster-General in reference to the council’s protest against the action of the Post and Telegraph Department in having erected a wooden building on a Government section in the brick area, advising. that the structure Was only to be used temporarily pending the erection of a permanent garage and requesting that in the circumstances, the council would wave its objections. After a prolonged discussion it was moved that a further protest be made to the Department and also to the Hon. E. A. Hansom. The motion, however, lapsed for the want of a seconder, the feeling of the council being that no purpose would be gained by pursuing the subject any further.

It was unanimously resolved to support a proposal by tho Otahuhu Borough Council, that Parliament, be asked to pass- a short Act sotting up a commission to inquire into tho claims of boroughs for relief in eases where the main highways had been permanently formed prior to the passing of the Highways Act. The Dannevirke County Council forward a statement showing that the contract price of Tapuata stream bridge waa £723 17s, plus advertising, £7 19s 6d and that the Borough Council’s share was £l2l 19s sd.—lt was decided to inquire from the County Council whether it was intended to tarseal tho bridge this season. Cr. McKinnon pointed out that the ’’take off” was very rough. It was resolved not to pass the account for payment until the position regarding tar-seal-ing was ascertained. Cr. F. W. Smith pointed out the danger to children through motor vehicles being driven through the playing area of the domain. The matter was referred to the works committee.

Cr. Stein reported that tho lighting on the band rotunda had been improved and advocated providing a gas stove for the new stand in the domain. This was referred to the works committee.

It was resolved on the motion of Cr. McNabb that ploughing and sowing tho portion of ground about the new stand be proceeded with this autumn.
