Chinese Cook Charged With Attempted Murder

RESENTED SEAMAN’S REBUKE.

KNIFE PLAY ON BOARD VESSEL AT WESTPORT.

WESTPORT, Last Night.

Fong Sum, a Chinese cook on tho s.s. Strathmore, appeared beforo Mr. Meldrum S.M., to-day, charged with tho attempted murder of John McKay, a seaman, on October 5, when the vessel was a Westport. McKay gave evidence that ho came out of the hold at about 8 a.m. and was passing the galley, when accused called, him over and showed him somo provisions on a scale, stating they wero his rations for a week.

McKay called accused “a ” and tho latter stepped out of tho galley and stabbed him in the chest with a knife, witness holding accused’s arm to prevent a second attompt to stab him. The mate came and took the knife from accused. Witness had been treated in hospital since. In answer to Detectivo Murch, witness stated he made his reply to accused, because the latter was not giving them tho Board of Trade allowance. He was giving them only ounces of meat for breakfast, instead of eight ounces. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed for trial.
