20,000 HOMELESS FROM ALABAMA AND FLORIDA FLOODS
15 Deaths Reported TOWN OF ELBA HAS BEEN WIPED OFF MAP TALES OF MISERY AND DEATH FLOOD WATERS ARE GRADUALLY SINKING. Australian Press Association. Received Monday, 7.10 p.m. NEW YORK, March 17. . News from Troy (Alabama) states 20,000 persons are homeless to-night in Alabama and Florida as a result of the floods, which took a reported toll of 15 lives and caused damage estimated at over 15,000,000 dollars, with further reports of death and damage expected as the waters subside. The swollen rivers , are gradually sinking in the majority of places, leaving scenes of utter desolation. Stories of suffering, misery, death, privation and disease aro beginning to filter into rescue camps. The Red Cross and other organisations are working at top speed to aid the refugees. Airplanes are dropping food, medical supplies and preventative scrums over districts where landing is impossible. The Alabama National Guard is in control of the town of Elba, which is wiped off the map, according to witnesses and Geneva is practically in as bad a condition. The guardsmen are hurrying to remove and destroy carcases of cattle, dogs, swine and other animals, which wore drowned in uncounted numbers.
