BOOKMAKER CAUGHT
FEILDING CARPENTER FINED £5. -“ONLY IN A SMALL WAY.” Before Mr. K. M. Watson, S.M., at the Feilding Magistrate’s court yesterday, Alfred George Sporle, appeared voluntarily and pleaded guilty to a charge of bookmaking. In prosecuting, Sergeant Cahill said that in response to complaints. Detective Russell and he visited Sporle's home and while there, the telephone was fairly busy. When Sporle came in, he was perfectly frank and confessed to doing some bookmaking on a small scale. Sporle was a carpenter and apart from his bookmaking, a married man with two children. The Magistrate stressed the severity of the penalty for the offence and decided to treat defendant leniently, as he was not a large bookmaker and was a married man. In fining Spone £5, Mr. Watson advised him to give up the business.
