ROYAL COMMISSION ON MINING INDUSTRY

BRUCE ACTIVE,

SHILLING A TON BOUNTY WOULD COST £350,000.

Telegraph—Copyright. United Press Association —By Electril Received Friday, 2 a.m . CANBERRA, Feb. 21.

The Prime Minister announced today that he proposed to appoint a Royal Commission to make a full inquiry into the coal industry. The terms of reference are now under consideration. All parties concerned in the industry have been asked to a preliminary conference at Canberra on Monday, when the terms of reference will be settled.

Later, Mr. Bruce laid before Parliament a number of documents relating to the stagnation of coal mining in New South Wales. He stressed the need for a reduction of prices for coal and added that his investigation had revealed that at least 10,000 miners on fhe northern fields had not received the basic wage, owing to the intermittcncy of their employment. i Mr. Bruco estimates that his Government’s promised bounty of one shilling a ton on coal for export would cost the taxpayers of Australia £350,000.
