KIWITEA COUNTY
Meeting of the Council The Iviwitea County council met at Kimboltoo yesterday Cr. L. T. -MeLean (chairman) •presiding. There were also present Councillors F. O. Stack, J. A. T. Brown. D. L. Younger, W. Hair, T. B. Wood, W. P. Shaw, J. H. Williamson and N. V. Shannon. Correspondence. The following correspondence was dealt with:—
From the Ivairanga county council, forwarding tho council's share of the heavy traffic license fees collected for the quarter cuded December, amounting to £IOO 2 s sd.—Received.
From the Pul.Jic Works department, advising payment of subsidy on main highways amounting to £776 Is lOd, also grant for Otamakapua Block road amounting to £lo.—Received. From the Commissioner of Crown lands advising that the council's scheme for the expenditure of “thirds” accrued on Crown sections in this county will be placed before the Land board for consideration. —Received.
Other Business. The transfer of'scctions 124, 125 and 127 Ohingaiti township to C. Stent senr., was confirmed. The County clerk was authorised to take proceedings for the recovery of outstanding dog tax.
Rate Position. The county treasurer reported that amount of general rates outstanding foi the current year was £306 12s 9d out of a total levied of £11,269 14s Sd. Oi tho special rates levied amounting to £l4O 12s 2d, there was £SB 6s lid outstanding. Arrears outstanding on account of -previous years totalled £95 17s 7d.
Overseer’s Reports. The county overseers, (Messrs Eggers and Stent) reported as follow: — Cheltenham: The main highway sections of roads in this riding have received frequent attention with the giader ,and Cheltenham Cross road and a section of Haync’s road have also been trimmed with the power grader.
The contractor has made fair progress delivering maintenance metal on Perry’s and Mcßoth’s roads. The quantities delivered during the past month are: Perry’s road 224 cubic yards; Mcßcth’s” road 2641 cubic yards; total 4SSJ cubic yards. This contract should be completed at an early date. ICinibolton road and Perry’s road have been trimmed with the road grader. Waituna: The usual maintenance work has received attention on the section of main highway in this riding and fern and scrub have been cut back on the Mangapipi road. Hautapu: In tho Upper Kawhatau Valley an old slip was cleared away and the weak places metalled; the bad points are now being cut back. On the * Mangawharariki road metal has been carted out and tipped a/t tho roadsido for repairs when required and several points are being taken off. Tho points on Sullivan’s Hill have been cut back and improvements effected to the bad corner on the Dress Circle road.
Pakihikura: On the Ohingaiti-Pem-berton road, points have been cut back and the rend widened in the worst places. On the Tutaewhio road, repair metal has been tipped in convenient heaps and the slips and water tables attended to. The road over the Otara Hill has received attention, the big /tones having been picked out, and the surface clayed. Metal has been tipped as the roadside for repairs on the Mangamako and a breastwork put in and the w'eak places metalled on the Mangarere. Ongo: The work of delivering maintenance metal on Sinclair’s road has been held up during the month owing principally to unfavourable weather conditions. The quantity delivered during the month was 404 cubic yards. The section of main highway in this riding has been trimmed with the grader. The whole length of the Parorangi road has also been repaired with the road grader and is now in very fair condition. An old timber culvert on Sinclair’s road has been replaced with 13 inch concrete pipes. Kimbolton: Owing to unfavourable weather conditions, the delivery of maintenance metal on Mcßeth’s road has been delayed. This section has cut up vory much with heavy haulage and will, in consequence, require more metal than the estimated quantity. During the past month the county trucks have delivered the following quantities of metal: —Mcßeth’s road 446 cubic yards; Edward street 48§ cubic yards; (Kiwitea riding) Kimbolton road IScubic yards, Oroua Valley 13 cubic yards; total 5254 cubic yards. The sections of main highway in this riding have all been trimmed with tho power grader and the usual maintenance work on all roads and the cutting back of fern and scrub also received attention.
Pcep-O-Eay: The surfacemen have been engaged most of the time cutting back fern and scrub on the roads, and the usual maintenance work and cleaning out of culverts and water tables have also received attention.
Itangiwahia: McKean’s Hill has received attention, the big stones picked out, and the rough places blinded with clay. Tho Otamakapua road has been trimmed and the pot-holes attended to, and at Mangarimu t/he rvorst places metalled. On Whare road, the iern and scrub have been cleared away, points cut back and the worst places metalled.—Received.
