Members of the Australian Timber Workers’ union at Sydney, in accordance with their decision to do no Saturday work, in defiance of the new award, absented themselves this morning and attended a mass meeting at the Trades hall, which was camouflaged as a .social gathering, in order to defeat the new clause of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court , which imposes a fine of £IOOO for holding anything in the nature of a strike mecting. ■ The meeting opened with the chorus “Advance Australia Fair,” followed by “Solidarity for Ever.” The outcome of the meeting is not disclosed but it is understood a message was read from Victoria expressing the intention of strenuously opposing Judge Lukin’s award. It is also announced that some master timber merchants here intend to continue working under the former award until all sections of the industry decide what attitude is to be adopted towards the men.

A small section of the employers has expressed the intention of docking four hours' pay from the wages of the men who absented themselves to-day.,
