APROACH TO VIADUCT AT MAKOTUKU BURNED

RAILWAY TRAFFIC DISLOCATED. PASSENGERS TAKEN BY CAR FROM ORMONDVILLE. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Last Night. Railway' traffic in southern Hawke’a Bay was completely dislocated to-day, owing to portion of the approach to the Makotuku railway i viaduct, a few chains from the railway station, being burned early in tho morning. No trains were able to pass over the bridge, necessitating the transhipment of passengers, who were conveyed between Ormondville and Makotuku by motor car.

Twenty-five sleepers of the approach were destroyed and tho under-structure was also badly damaged. Repair work is in progress and the line may be open fpr traffic to-morrow. It is ' thought a spark from a traia last evening caused the fire. Inquiries from the Palmerston North station last night elicited the informa tion that tho normal service would be resumed this morning. BLAZE AT THAMES. THAMES, Last Night. A fire at one o’clock this morning considerably damaged the Queens Hotel, owned by the Campbell-Ehrin-fried Co., and occupied by Mr. Frank Grubb. The alarm was raised by a constable who saw smoke issuing from the rear of the building. Tho brigade was promptly on the scone, but the flames had. a good hold and caused considerable damage 4o tho kitchet and three bedrooms. The insurance ol the furniture was £360 and on ;the building £IOOO.

BOARDINGHOUSE DESTROYED.

WAIMATE, Last Night.

A fire at two o’clock this morning completely destroyed an eight-roomed wooden boardinghouse owned and oe cupied by Mr. James Anderson. A boarder woke to find the fire well advanced, and, though tho brigade promptly arrived, a strong wind mad? a save impossible. The outbreak originated in the .sitting room whes* a fire had been lit in the evening.
