, , i —. —L. THOMSON HOCKEY SHIELD. From Our Own Correspondent. On Friday evening a small but rep rcsentative meeting of tho Eangiotv district was held in the school to con sider the generous offer of Mr and Mrs. E. Thomson to donate a handsome Challenge Shield for competition amongst the country schools of surrounding districts. For several years the boys of the schools have been well catered for by tho Eugby competitions in vogue, but so far the only games possible to primary girls’ hockey teams of the country schools were ..those .which entailed much travelling and competition with the largo town schools. - Mr W. H. Gimblctt, who was elected chairman of the meeting, thanked Mr and 1 Mrs. Thomson for their generous offer and brought up the matter, of jurisdiction, affiliation with the Manawatu Ladies’ Hockey Association. . Ho stressed that fact that the donation of tho shield would greatly stimulate hoookey in. country schools and tend to bring the more scattered country schools into closer touch with ■ each other. : • •. . Some discussion ensued regarding the proposed boundaries of the district in which the shield should be eligible for competition ,and it was eventually decided to sent a delegate to Palmerston North to gain fuller information, anij report at a subsequent meeting. . The committee, with power to add to its number, consists of Mrs. E. Thomson, Messrs. E. Thomson, M. Te Awe Awe, W. H. Gimblctt, H. H. Simmons, W. J. Nairnc, H. J. Eedshaw,, TV- C. Donaldson, H. Bond and ;L. J. Walker. As tbe season is now late and the donors wish that the shield be won this vear, the only solution appears to be a “sudden death” competition, V v School Football Match. Messrs. Bennett (Taikorea) and Niool (Oroua Downs) brought their combined team along on Saturday morning to play a banner match. Influenza and accidents had somewhat reduced the strength Of both teams but tho game was very willing and well contested from start to finish. The hero of the match was Jimmy Hchir who scored all the points for his team. This boy possesses a wonderful turn of speed and is always dangerous. When he breaks through he is a certain scorer. The Eangiotu-Bainesse team played, very well and more than held their own for a long time. At half time the scores were G all, each team having two tries to its credit. In tho second salf when the local lads were tiring “Jimmy” watching bis opportunity dashed through to score twice. One of these tries he converted, ■ the final whistle leaving the yellows victorious by 14 —G. . . ! - Mr J. Fitzgerald referred impartially. ' 'I r ;
