Carnarvon

’From Oar Own Correspondent. i HOCKEY. On Saturday the local ladies team journeyed to Fcilding meet Hinckoa on Victoria Park. The meeting of these teams proved a fast and spectacular exhibition of hockey. The following represented Carnarvon: M. M'Kclvio (capt.), M. Gibbons, E. M‘Kelvic, B. Reeve, E. Dixon, E. Lyon, W. Glare, T. Harris, E. Harris, M. Scott, and E. Hill. The forwards and halves of our local team played their very best game in this season's competition, their hitting, passing and team work as a whole being a treat to watch. The three fun backs at times seemed uneasy, and lacked the necessary sting, but. nevertheless succeeded in aiding their team to victory. Hinckoa Were unlucky in fielding a team one player short, and this is what cost them the game as Carnarvon wore able to intercept many of their passes which may have'turned out profitable had they entered the circle. Offside play on both sides was very noticeable, and resulted in numerous free hits but as both sides were playing strenuously for victory this can be overlooked. The final score 3'goals to 2 in favour of Carnarvon, was a fair indication of the merits of the teams. For the winners individualising of players is hardly fair, as all gave of their very best. Still Eita r Dixon, Ilawi M'Kelvic and Winnie Clare at times did some really brilliant work, and' saved their side on numerous occasions, when danger threatened. For the losers M. Wilkie was a tower of strength, and M. Read, as full-back, saved her side from further attack by her safe stopping and hard hitting. R. Dixon scored the three goals for the winners, but mention must be made of R. Lyon in making a spectacular run from half way and passing all the opposing,; side to hand a nice pass to Miss Dixbn to net. This clearly .emphasises tho .necessity 'of following up and the gain thereby; Many more scores could bo secured in most teams by players following up closely to accept a.pass from a team mate when in th® striking circle. At the conclusion of this game the Visitors wore entertained at afternoon tea by the Hinckoa team. ‘/Messrs. J.Hefdrhan and C. Wick; ham ably'controlled tho game. Carnarvon, by this win, practically arc assured of the season's championship, as they now lead by six points with three games still to be played. The local men’s team met Stanway on Victoria Park, and this proved U hard and fast game. St.anway fielded an improved team and were unlucky in not; scoring; G. Florence netted the only score of; the matcht'for Carnarvon, and the game, ended one goal to nil in favour of Carnarvon. Had Stanway not had such an efficient goal keeper the score have been three or four more goals against them, as their goalie brought off some brilliant saves in thO mouth of the' goal on numerous occasions. Messrs. J. Hprdraan and C._ Wickham ably controlled tho game. On Wednesday next tho local ladies are endeavour to arrange a friendly match with the Kongotea hockey team. This should afford' useful practice for both teams/. ■ 1 ' , . PERSONAL. .. Mr. W. ’Turner Sr. was obliged to enter hospital during the week to'undor-

go an operation, as also was Pat Lofts. The latter is a member Of the men’s hockey team, and was unable to take his place last Saturday-against Stanway. Mrs. Jack Gills is also in.hospital, and has had to undergo an operation. Latest reports indicate she is progressing, satisfactorily, • • ‘ \ r> Misses J. Precklingtop and N. Scott returned from Wellington during the week. Miss Makcre MacCaul has returned to her home at Marton. ■ ' i v ,.» ; NEW SOHOOIi. > Eesidents are anxiously awaiting for the. Education Board to make a start at building the new Clydesdale public school for whieh the grant has alrerdy been authorised.
