NAUTICAL INQUIRY IN COOK STRAIT INCIDENT
TWO STEAMERS INVOLVED. (Per Press Association.) , WELLINGTON, Last Night. The Minister of Marine has decided that iii the interests of public safety, tho circumstances attending an occurrence which caused much, alarm to passengers on the Plcton steamer Tamahine and the Sydney steamer in Cook Strait recently when they appeared vo be in danger of colliding, shall be investigated at a public inquiry. He is taking this action under the terms of Section 239 of the Shipping and Seamen Act which enables official inquiries to be held into occurrences which do not cause an actual marine casualty. The Court usually comprises a Magistrate with an assessor, aud has power to make an order for payment, of costs by any party which it deems blameworthy. It is alleged by passengers on the 'Tam,ahlne trvelllng from Wellington to Plcton recently that collision with the Maunganul bound from Wellington to Sydney, was averted by the narrowest of margins. Tho incident was subsequently subject to an official Inquiry by the Union Company when it was hold that a breach of the Company’s regulations had been committed, and masters of both vessels were transferred to cargo steamers.
