OF HIS POVERTY—THEY OF THEIR SUPERFLUITY

CASTING- THEIR GIFTS INTO THE TREASURY. EXTREMES OF PATRIOTISM; FOR NATIONAL DEBT. [By Electric Cable-Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Thursday, 8.55 p.m.) LONDON, Fob. 15. The Right Honorable Winston Churchill, Chancellor of the Exchequer, has received the. following letter: — “Honorable Sir: Seeing some one has kindly given haif a million to help the debt I felt I would like to do a bit myself, so I am sending ten shillings as I am only & poor man.” Mr. Churchill has publicly expressed the thanks of the nation, and has warm appreciation for the patriotism of these two Britishers. Visitors to Nice recently won £6OOO at the bacoaret tables and telegraphed to Mr. Churchill offering to devote a substantial part of their winnings to the national debt.

EMPIRE-WIDE EFFORT SUGGESTED (Received Thursday, 10 p.m.) LONDON, Feh. 16. Besides the ten-shilling gift the Chancellor of the Exchequer gratefully acknowledged a gift of £IOO for the debt extinction. Sir Reginald Hall, at p public dinner at Eastbourne last night, hoped a public fund would he started and within a few minutes £SO was subscribed, and a committee formed to carry out the scheme. No doubt if the movement were popularized throughout the country —perhaps even throughout the Empire—a huge sum might be raised. Several critics, however, see objections to locking up money for fifty or a hundred years.
