DOBSON MINE DISASTER
ASSISTANCE FOR SUFFERERS. The dire straits in which the dependents of the victims of the Dobson mino disaster find themselves in at the approach of the Christmas season is arousing sympathy and a desire to help all over the Dominion. The wives and families of the nine men who met their end with such tragic suddenness are practically penniless, with no hope for the future except in the generosity of the Dominion. Not only are the dependents of the dead miners in sore straits, but it has to be remembered that all the other employees aro out of work and the prospects of a merry Christmas are not very bright for them and their wives and families. With these facts in mind a meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the Labour Party and a number of sympathisers with the bereaved relatives of the minors was held last evening, when it was decided to open a subscription list. The sum of £lO 16s was contributed in the room, and further amounts were promised. Anyone desirous of assisting may forward donations to the “Manawatu Daily Times” office or to Miss Emily Hill, 201, Ferguson street, who has been appointed treasurer to the fund. At a meeting of the Social Club Committee, it was unanimously agreed to run a monster euchre tournament on Wednesday, December 22, for the purpose of raising funds for the Dobson miners’ dependents. The time and place of the tournament will be advertised later.
