OROUA COUNTY RATES
GENERAL ASSESSMENT OVER WHOLE AREA. At yesterday's meeting of the Orouu County Council, that body agreed to strike a general rate over the whole county—instead of an individual riding rate —amounting to 12-16ths of a penny in the £ on the capital value of all rateable property. The chair(nan expressed satisfaction that the Council had agreed to strike a general county rate. The now rate represented an increase in some cases and a decrease in others when with the general rate which the seven ridings had been previously called upon to pay. Last year, the seven ridings were reduced to two ridings, known as the Western and Eastern. The new rate, as it affects the individual ridings, represents a decrease of >£339 18s 3d on a 12-lGth of a penny rate in the Eastern riding, and an increase of £l9O 15s 3d on a 12-16th of a penny rate in the Western riding. Taken as a whole, the new general rate represents a decrease over the whole county of £149 2s 9d. The hospital rate resolved on by the Council amounts to 3-16ths of a penny in the £ on the capital value of all rateable property in the County. This rate represents an increase of ebout l-21st of a penny in the £ on last year's rate, which was not sufficient to cover the Hospital Board’s levy. The fact that last year’s rate did not meet the levy was due to unpaid rates and the new rate is expected to meet the new levy, as well as to wipe out last year’s debit.
