iVIANAWATU EVENING MEETING. The Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club held another evening meeting at the, Sportsground yesterday, when there was a large gathering of competitors and spectators. The results of the events were as follow: — 220 yards.—Strange (9yds.), 1; O. Scotney (13). 2; Walker (9), 3. Bight started. Won by a yard, with inches separating second and third. Time, 22 4-Bsec3.
1000 yards flat. —0. Scotney (30yds.), 3; Godfrey (30), 2; R. Scotney (30), 3; Prouse (100), 4. A good race, the nine competitors finishing close together. Time, 2min., 14 2-6 secs. Long Jump.—A Weston (6ins.). 3,8 ft., 2Jias., 1; R. McDonald (Bins.), 18ft., liins.. 2; Oxenham (l2ins.). 3.7 ft., 4ilns.. 3; nine competitors. Mile cycle race.—F. Powell (76), 1; C. Casey (110), 2; Q. E. Cooksloy (BO), 3. One other competitor. No time was taken.
AMERICANS COMPETE AT HAWERA.
HAHN BREAKS A RECORD., (Per Press Association.) HAWERA, January 4. An athletic meeting was held here yesterday evening, the American athletes,. Scholz and Hahn, competing. The track was somewhat soft after recent rain. Good times were put up in all events. Hahn beat the New Zealand record for the half-mile by one and three-fifths seconds, while Scholz won the hundred yards from scratch in ten seconds. West Coast runners assembled in force and have every reason to be satisfied with their showing against the American champions. Below are given the results of the races the Americans competed in:— 100yds.—First heat: Scholz (America). scr. 1; Maitland (Wanganui), syds., 2, Time 10 1-5 sec. Final: Scholz 1, Rosser 2, Rusden (Wanganui) 3. Scholz won a beautifullyjudged race by inches. Time lOsec. 880yds.—Hahn (America) scr. 1; Gilmour (New Plymouth) 25yds„ 2; O’Grady (Patea) 75yds. 3. Hahn had the race in hand all the way and •won by twenty yards. Time Imin. 56 1-5 secs., beating the New Zealand record by 1 3-ssec. 220yds.—First heat; Scholz scr. 1; Norris (New Plymouth), 12yds., 2. Tima 22secs. Final: Scholz 1, Rosser 2, Torrens (Patea), 3. Scholz came with a great burst over the last few yards and won by a foot. Time 22 1-5 sec. 200yds. West Coast Championship— Telfar (Wanganui), 1; Norris (New Plymouth) 2; Shore (Hawera), 3. Tim© 21 S-Bsec. 440yds.—Maitland (Wanganui) H yds., 1; Hahn fecr, 2; O’Grady (Ratea) 37yds. 3. Maitland ran a fine race, but Hahn was only a foot behind at the finish. Time 6Q 4-sseo. )
