CROQUET

CHAMPION GOES UNDER. The first surprise of the Manawatu Croquet championship meeting was created by the defeat of the 1924 champion, W. J. Robertson, who went trader at the hands of Mrs. Campbell, of Manawatu. The matches played yesterday practically saw the end of the third rounds, and in some instances tbe semi-finals will be reached to-day. Although rain fell in the morning. the games were not affected and by th e afternoon the light breeze had made the greens almost normal for play, being fairly fast and in good condition. Results of the championships to date are as follow:Singles.—Mrs. W. J. Robertson defeated Mrs. McLeod, 26—8; Mrs. Campbell defeated W. J. Robertson, 26—4: Mrs. Gambrill defeated Mrs. McMurray, 26—15; Mrs. Robertson defeated Mrs. Tapp, 26—8. Doubles.—Aljeadamfs Fuller and Spinley defeated Mesdames Corbridge and Spring, 26—14; Mesdames Brown and McLeod defeated Mesdames McRae and Innes, 26—22.

Handicap games resulted as (follow:

Doubles.—Mesdames Eckerslcy and Sinclair (74), a bye; Mesdames McMurray and Moore (84) defeated Mesdames Brown and Fletcher (SJ), 26 —9; Mesdames Gambrill and John Young (44) defeated Mesdames Jensen and Durrant (9), 26—11. Singles, A Grade: Mrs. McLeod (64) defeated Mr. C. Sinclair (64), 26 —10; Mr, Robertson (8) defeated Mrs. Healey (6). by defaudt; Mrs. Fuller (64) defeated Mrs. Spring (5), 26—23; Mrs. Gambrill (4) defeated Mrs. Mayes (5), 26—9.
