LAWN TENNIS

HAWKE'S BAY v. WELLINGTON. The first inter-provincial lawn tennis match staged in Palmerston North takes place at Linton, street courts to-morrow, when Hawke's Bay meets Wellington. The presence of E. D. Andrews in the latter side is bound to ensure a good attendance. That his games on Saturday aro not altogether foregone conclusions is evidenced by the fact that both J. N, Lowry and Stan Powdrell took the first set off him in the semi-final and final respectively of the Hawke’s Bay championships at Dannevlrke. Another interesting' personality on the home side is Ron Febkins, who several years ago fought out the Dannevlrke junior final with Andrews and succedod him in'the title, as he did in the New Zealand junior championship. R. R. T. Young and C. F. Atmore are too well-kn Own to need further mention. H. J. Thompson’s improvement last season was phenomenal, but he has not struck form this year. He is one of th 0 most popular players today and his selection to represent the province has caused general rejoicing in Palmerston North. Ben O’Brien, the remaining man, is champion of Wellington Club, and also' made rapid strides last year. He was In the Manawatu at Christmas time and had several games at Linton street. But partnered by his brother, L. O’Brien, the pair could make no impression on F. McLachlan and' RDonald. The Hawke’s Bay side is not yet known, although it play's Wanganui in th e river city to-day, but it promises to be stronger in doubles than in singles.
