TURAKINA HEALTH CAMP
A VISITOR’S IMPRESSIONS. Situated in a snug position on Mr. B. P. Lethbrldglo’s property, “Annbank,” Turakina, are some 20 tents in which 11G children are living under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Gunn, the well-known Education Department health officer. Those children who attend school in the Wanganui Education Board’s District, hail from Palmerston North, Wanganui and Feilding and are suffering from the effects of malnutrition or have not had the benefit of correct feeding, and the object in holding the camp Is to give them an opportunity of living under th e best hygienic conditions. To the visitor the camp stands out as a wonderful example of interest in the welfare of others and that it deserves wholehearted support by the public goes without saying. The camp awakes at 6.30 and the children parade for cocoa and then go through some light exercises, after which they have breakfast. Toothbrush drill follows and the children assemble and salute the flag. At nine o’clock open-air school begins and th e children are occupied until 10 o’clock when they parade again for a hot drink. After this they enjoy sun bathing until mid-day when lunch is served. From one till two o’clock a compulsory rest hour is observed, the children being given a hot drink again at 2 o'clock and carry -on with openair school till 4.30. Tea is served at five o’clock and the children participate in games, etc. The Iflag is saluted again and “Last Post” brings an end to another day in the lives of the happy company.
