DAIRYING IN TARANAKI
WORST SEASON FOR TEARS.
The present season is the worst experienced by dairy farmers for a number of years. In fact, one cannot remember such k season in the Taranaki province. Up to the time of writing there has only been an occasional fine day, the ■vyeather for the most part being cold and wet, with occasional hall storms, only quite recently we have experienced two or three very severe frosts. This has had the effect of checking all growth and has been reflected in the milk yield, which shows a considerable decline right through the province South Taranaki appears to have suffered even more so than the North, Comparing the output of one South Taranaki factory, which may be taken as a guide, the output up to the present represents a decrease of something like 15 per cent, compared with the same period last year, while th> outnut in the North has decreased to something like 10 per cent lilbcral Advances. Fortunately most factories are making liberal advances this year, and the increased pay-out will largely make up for the decreased production. Most factories are making advances of 1/6, while others are paying out as much as 1/SJ per lb. butterfat. Even with the increased payout some farmers will not receive the same amount as they did last year with a 1/3 pay-out. To show what a poor season the present one has been, may be mentioned the case of one farmer in this district who is taking 1500 of milk per day at present, as against 2500 at the same time last year.
While speaking to a factory manager the other day a “Stratford Post” representative was informed that out of sixty suppliers at his factory only four were taking more milk than this time last year.
