Australia and New Zealand between them were represented by eleven players in the men’s singles at Wimbledon, but the New Zealanders, Nicholson and Salmond, scratched and Eotheringham’s match was deferred till to-morrow. Of tho remainder, only Anderson, Sumner and Barclay reached the second round. Andreac provi/ed Anderson with a most thrilling and gruelling run. Andreae sportingly said he was glad ho had made such a good fight, but was most pleased that Anderson won. because he recognised he could not have gone much further, while Anderson might go to the last stages of the championship. Wallis Myers in the "Dally Telegraph” says Andreac, who was In medical practice in New Zealand before he settled in India, is just tho man to harass a greater player who is out of form. He gave the champion of Australia the fright of his life.
Miss Eames defeated Mrs Melody (New Zealand), 6—2, 6 —2, B—l. Scroope defeated Utz 6—4, B—6,8 —6, S—4. Anderson defeated Andreae 2 —G. 6 —3, 6—B, 6—3, 6—3, Andreae at one time, with the score two sets all, was loading 3 —l. Anderson just escaping being eliminated in tho first round. He seldom revealed top form. Andreac was a pertinacious defender, retrieving brilliantly, while Anderson was mostly wild and erratic.
Godfree, the British Davis Cup representative, was heated by another Englishman, Sharpe, 2—6, 6—4, 6—l and 6—2. Gilbert defeated the Indian Davis Cup representative, Hadl. The Frenchman Crochet defeated the Yorkshire champion Gregory. Belgrave defeated Fisher, 6 —3, 2—6, 6 —l, B—lo, 6—3. Barclay defeated Mavrogordato 12—14. 7—5, G —l, 3—6. 6—3.
