THE MUNICIPAL GAS DEPARTMENT
[Published By Arrangement.]
SPLENDID DISPLAY OF GAS COOKERY. An outstanding feature of the Show again this year is the display by the Municipal Gas Department to bring before the public the advantages and 'economies of cooking by gas. The lady demonstrator is in attendance dally explaining the various uses to which this commodity can be applied. Up to the present an erroneous opinion prevails in the minds of some that gas has had its day, but a little attention to the demonstrations given will more than convince that gas especially in its application to the modern home, is to-day of far greater adaptability than, at any period of its history. It is of sufficient interest to mention that the Chairman of the Directors of the Gas, Light and Coke Co., Ltd., London, made the statement at a recent annual meeting of the company, that their company alone was supplying more light, heat and power, than the wholo of the electrical undertakings of Great Britain. Nowhere in the world has the introduction of a rjval commodity adversely influenced the progress of a gas undertaking beyond possibly, arresting for short duration, its onward march. A case in point is Toronto, a city adjacent to the far famed Niagara Falls where since the introduction of the hydro-elec-tric scheme the gas undertaking has flourished beyond the most sanguine expectations of its proprietors. Tho simple reason is that gas gives the household consumers a more economical and advantageous service. Certainly it is a far cry to Toronto but tho same advantages as to household economy prevail at Palmerston North. Our friendly rivals have their various spheres of usefulness, but for cooking and heating in homes, offices, restaurants, showrooms, churches, public buildings and elsewhere the cheapest and quickest heating commodity is gas. . And now that a reduction in gas has been made to local consumers, gas for domestic purposes will bo used more than ever. As showing the superiority af gas for cooking purposes it may bo mentioned that notwithstanding the great strides being made by electricity in tho United States, last year no fewer than SOO,OOO new gas cookers were installed in that country. The gas departments exhibit is an education in itself. All householders and others attending are cordially invited to be present, and should make a point of. seeing the lady demonstrator at work and gas cookers in operation. There seems to be no limit to the uses for gas for in addition to the various kinds of gas cookers, there is displayed in full operation, wash coppers, gas irons, bath heatefs, in.stAntanaous hot water heaters for lavatory basins, etc., gas Arcs, and heaters of any varieties, tinmans heaters for soldering Irons, glue pots and stoves for cabinet-makers, blowpipes for brazing, etc., in fact lack of space compelled the department to curtail its display. The brilliant lighting of this stall is a feature In Itself. The whole exhibit la one of the gems of the Show. Do not miss it.
