BOXING TRY-OUTS
Attractive Programme At Winter Show SOME FIGHTING—AND SOME FUN, The close of the first day of the Winter Show was marked by alengthy program of fistic activity, put before a large crowd by the Manawatu Boxing Association for the purpose of giving the aspirants to representative honours a try-out. TJ»t funny side was not lacking last evening, and a woeful waste of wind and energy, and periods of profuse perspiration were at limes in evidence, but there was some good boxing too, and in a few of them any bouts, the lads showed creditable form. One of the outstanding was the first appearance of a fair-haired youth named Downes, who will go far if given up to a scientific course of conditioning. Messrs. Steel and Loulsson were the judges, Mr. Watchorn the referee, and Mr. H. E. Bennett the announcer. Promising Light-weights, When Edgar Downes (.9.13) shaded up to Slater Hayes (9.10) the aiidlencc wanted to order the hearse for the former, this being his first appearance. When Gorlgljeater Rail* dell toiled the bell, however, It was hot for Downes’ funeral, but for a very bright, healthy and willing engager meht. Hayes became a dancing, swaying form, dived in—and slammed! He was met half-way, anil the new chum stood up and carrieu the fight back to him every time. The last round was good stuff, and Downes, though down on points, is the cut of a boxer. Hayes offended frequently with an open glove. Later Hayes mot Roy Forward (9.2), of Wanganui, and this 'act brought the crowd to its feet, yelling for more. Forward stood off and waited for Hayes. While Hayes was slogging as hard as ho could at Forward’s ribs, the Wanganui lad wm dishing out something to Haye f s face, which will leave a mark for a Jay or two. A straight- left was a great- asset to Forward, and he came to light with it in tho completing roubd. One judge gavei the fight a, draw, the other--(gave it to Hayes on one-point only, and the referee Was left to decide. Hayes’ fight. . -■ Gory Feathers. : - R. Lunn (Palmerston North) was matched with M. Carroll (Wanganui), both scaling ii.l3, and in the first round the Wanganui boy planted one in the other’s bellows and terminated the engagement. Nesbitt (5.7) had to fight out a bye with R. Potbury (8.10),' both of Palmerston North, and after being warned for loafing, they made a pretty good showing at the last. Then Potbury had to meet Carroll in the final —and some fight it was. If the crowd wanted a gladiatorial contest, it got it. Potbury came with his head up seeking trouble, and did not have to go far, for Carroll met him half-way and made his head feel ykc an apple on a string. Carroll did not go unpunished, however. On the contrary, he accepted some heavy reminders to face and body. Potbury look the jazz honours with his neat posturing and variety of steps, but he thumped in stinging, ripping crashes at convenient moments. He got tired and lost on points. Whacking Welters. Billy Walden’s (10.33 straight-left was too classy for Phil Corliss (10.5),and he got a points decision in a fair fight. C. Smith (10.4) from Mangahao and M. J. O’Brien (10.3), Wanganui, showed what damage a pair of fighters can do in a few minutes, with a •little vaudeville thrown in. A knockout was due at any stage and the man from the hydro-works ' succumbed to a 1000 volt punch in the second round. It took Walden some time to get the bettor of O’Brien, but it was only a matter of time. O’Brien’s teeth rattled to the stuttering accompaniment of his knees, and when he went down for a rest, the referee thought he had had enough. He was game and ready to go on. Middle Muddle.
M. Teece (11.0), Palmerston North, and Repsah (10.13), Palmerston North, fell all - over one another in a funny bout, the crowd shrieking its unrestrained delight. Teece was stopped in his slaughter in the third 1 round after securing several "falls.”
