COMPOSITE PAPER.
IN NEWSLESS NEW YORK.
OFFICIALS DECLARE STRIKE ILLEGAL.
SUBURBAN SHEETS' HARVEST.
[By Electric Cable—Copyright.] [Aust. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Wednesday, 9 p.m.)
NEW YORK, September 18
Eleven afternoon newsparers affected by the pressmen's strike united their fragmentary forces, which contrived to operate the presses of the "Evening Post" and succeeded in issuing a mid-afternoon edition, entitled: "Combined New York Evening Newspapers," the front page of which bore a series of mastheads of the cooperating newspapers. This enterprise enlisted the effort of publications of the most diverse policies, including a Hearst paper and a German language paper. Meanwhile, the strike situation is unabated. There is only the slightest hope of issuing to-morrow's newspapers. The dailies in the suburbs published extra editions and rushed the metropolis with scores of newsboys. The International Union officials have appealed to the men to return to work, and have called for volunteers to come to help the papers to resume, and to maintain the integrity and honour of the International Union.
