LONDON, September 18
The Board of Trade has opened an inquiry concerning 1 the steamer El Kahira, which mysteriously disappeared on a voyage in the Mediterranean in July, 1922, with all hands. No wreckage was found. Mr Bevan, the chief engineer, gave evidence that he left the boat after three days, because he was not satislied with the condition of the ship or the way the cargo was being stowed. He pointed out these deficiencies to tho captain, who shrugged his shoulders. Witness telegraphed his resignation to the owners and left without waiting for a reply. The vessel had no wireless.
The captain's widow gave evidence that she received a let'ter from her husband by a pilot on the boat, saying that there had been engine trouble and that everything seemed to be going wrong. ANOTHER SEA MYSTKRF. SHIP BELIEVED TO HAVE STRUCK ICEBERG. (Received Wednesday, 9 p.m.) CAPETOWN, September 18. The Nestor reports that wireless signals elicited no reply from the missing Baron Blantyre. Maritime opinion in Durban favours the theory that she struck an iceberg.
SCHOOL TEACHERS SLATED.
i mm n m CHARACTER BEFORE CULTURE. [By Electric Cable —Copyright}. fAiist and N" 7. Cable Awoclat'an.] (Received Wednesday, 8.25 p.m.) LONDOJT, Sept. 19. Bishop Welldon, a former headmaster af Harrow, while speaking at the British Association, made a strong attack upon the teaching profession. He complained that the State was not getting value for its money. Teachers had refused to share tho national and financial burden after the war, and some had actually gone on strike against a reduction in salaries, to the great injury of the pupils. The elementary teaching profession should not be a trade union. The time would come when the system of education inaugurated in 1871 might be well reviewed and brought into conformity with the aspirations of people, who knew that character was a more valuable clement than culture in the life of the Emtoire.
