CASES BEFORE THE MAGISTRATE A lengthy list of cases was dealt with by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., at yesterday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. George Hannah was fined £2 and 7/ costs for having been found on licensed premises after hours. "No, I cannot keep your name oat cf the papers; you have had too many convictions," was the Magistrate's reply to Jack Armstrong's application' after he had been lined 40/ and coots' for having committed an indecent act.; DAVIDSON REMANDED. A further remand for a week was granted in the case against Robert W. Davidson, this time on the application of the defending- counsel, Mr liutherfurd. The charge against accused is that he kept premises in To Awe Awe Street as a common gaming house. BREACH OF THE PEACE. As the result of an altercation in the Square on Saturday evening, a young man, William J. Watson, was charged with having committed a Irreach of the peace. He admitted tho offence, and it was stated by the police that defendant Avas talking- in a loud and violent manner to a man whom he struck and knocked to lite ground. Mr Grant appeared for him and urged his previous good record in extenuation. A tine of £1 and costs was imposed. I<X)OTBADL CLUB'S FUNDS. A charge of having stolen the sum of £8 13/SJ, by fraudulently omitting to account for it, from the funds of the Tokomaru Football Club, was preferred against its late secretary, Percy J. McCallum. He pleaded guilty, and the facts as stated by SeniorSergeant Fraser were that on M.arch 17th the whole of the club funds, amounting to'£7 12/s*, were handed over to accused. On April 21st Jic received another guinea, and then left the district, having failed to pay in any of the moneys. He returned on May 9th and was arrested. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, said he committed the offence without criminal intent. The Club had no banking account, and he

kept the money. When he left the) district, he did so for a fortnight's holiday, bur. returned to Tokomaru at the expiration of a fortnight. He was then arrested. Accused added that he had served three years and eight months with the N.Z.E.P. as a sergeant, and gained the Military Medal. If he was given a chance he would refund the money. The Magistrate decided to admit aocused to probation for two years and ordered him to pay the cost of the prosecution and in/ a week to the football club until the deficiency hail been made up. A .MONTH'S IMPRISONMENT. Ernest Vincent pleaded guilty to having stolen a cheque for fit 9/li, the property of John Glass, of Ohakune. Detective-Sergeant Quirke stated that, in April, Mr Glass was on a holiday visit to Palmerston North, and while in this town lost a cheque. It was found by accused, who cashed it at the Bunnythorpe Hotel. Nothing ef a dishonest nature was known against accused previously, though he had been convicted for assault. "I am afraid that a man with a record like, yours cannot be admitted to probation," said the Magistrate in sentencing accused to a month's imprisonment. BY-LAW CASES Gerald D. Pattle was fined £1 and costs for having failed to register his motor-car, and was similarly dealt with for having had it insufficiently lighted. For having failed to keep to the right side of the road when turning the corner of Bi oad and Duke Streets, Thomas Searle was lined 40/. A charge of negligent driving was dismissed. Mr Ongley appeared for defendant. After the hearing of the evidence, a charge against Simon Mora of having allowed stock to wander on the road at Pohangina, was dismissed. William Erickson was fined 10/ and 7/ costs for having left his car standing in the Square off the appointed stand for more than ten minutes. Jane Rawlins was similarly mulcted for a like offence. A. McKenzie and A. Galliehan were each fined £1 and 17/ costs for having alighted from a train whilst in motion.
