THE EXPEDITIONARY FORCE
At a meeting of Civil Servants at Greymouth on Tuesday, Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., presiding, it was resolved to contribute one day's pay to the War Fund for those receiving up to £3OO a year, and two day's pay for those who received over that amount. Six Army and Navy reservists left Gisborne for the South by the Mokoia last evening, and were farewelled enthusiastically. It is understood that the first section of Gisborne contimgent (50 men and horses) will leave for the South on Friday, and an iafantry section is expected to leave on Sunday. The Citizens' Defence Committee has enrolled a large number of men for local 'defence, and is endeavouring to provide them with rifles. Thirty-six volunteers for the Expeditionary Force, including three officers, successfully passed the test and with Greymouth contingent numbering 10, making 46 from A Company 13th Regiment. The contingent is proceeding to Greymouth on Friday, and overland to Christchureh on Satmriay. All are fully equipped. I Approximately 60 infantry im Pahiatua military district have volnmteered for service, also 50 mounted men. The Borough Council passed a resolution of appreciation of raisimg an Expeditionary Force. The loeal branch of tke Ambulance Assoeiatio* is taking steps to obtain requisites for the Expeditionary Force. Palmerston Working Men's Olah has donated £25 to the Patriotic Fnad. At a meeting at Wanganui last evening £lO6l was subscribed. MAYORESS'S PATRIOTIC PXJND. Liberal response came in yesterday to the Mayoress Patriotic Fund, and the total has now reached £241 17s 6d. In addition to amounts already contributed the following amounts have been handed in:—Mrs W. S. Marshall (Hunterville), £25; A Friend (Bunaiy-thorpe-Kairanga Road), £10; Mrs T. T. Kerslake, £10; Mrs T. Childs, £5 ss; Mr and Mrs G. J. Scott, £5; Mr and Mrs S. Abrahams, £5; collected per Mrs McDonald, £4 0s 6d, Mrs Dempsey, £3 3s; Miss Mcßae, £3; Mrs Law, Mrs (Dr) Whittaker, £2 2s each; Mrs E. S. Pees, Mrs Worrell, £1 each; anonymous, Mrs Aitcheson, 10s; Mrs G. Shailer, 10s; Mrs Isaacs, ss. OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. It is hardly necessary to remimd patriotic Palmerstonians of the High School Old Girls' Association's "War Fund" concert in the Opera House this evening. The Old Girls will present "Withered Leaves" and "Written in the Sand'' and will also render glees, solos, duets and patriotic songs and another big attraction will be a Grand Tableau "Britannia." The Band and Orchestral Society are also assisting, there being a torchlight procession by the former at 7.30. Everyone is eager to learn the latest war news and this will be announced om reeeipt. A bright programme has been arranged and admission is only 2s and Is and consequently a packed house is assured.
