At the Police Court to-day an ap- < parently young man with a long beard named Werner Tobin, was charged 1 with on August 10th at Fort Rose carrying loaded firearms to the eom- ] mon annoyance of His Majesty's subjects. Accused, who is a German, and 1 resided on the banka of the Mataura ] River, was in the habit of carrying a repeating rifle about with him with < which he said he was going to shoot ] Britishers. Two constables had been sent out to the district and kept a watch over defendant's hut all last . night and this morning when he came outside they arrested him. On going into the hut they found a double-bar-relled breach-loading gun which was : loaded, and a rifle. There was also a repeating rifle which defendant carried with him in the daytime when he : went to work in the bush. The Inspector of Police asked for i a remand for seven days to enable the police to secure evidence. He said accused was not right in his head. At this stage accused adopted an ag- ; gressive attitude and said he would let any man know he was right in his head. If anyone said he was not he *buld " get a fistful in the eye, follow- ! ed foy another from the other hand. Waving his arms about he declared: '' Yes, I Vill hit anyone on the nose too, who eays I am not right in head.'' He then gave the top of his head a violent slap alid said: "This head God Almighty has given to me; I am not a murderer; I only carried the rifle for sp°rt." . ' In answer to a question from tne 'Bench accused said he was a German and not naturalised. He did not think lie had proved a nuisance to anybody. He spoke in excellent and fluent language. The Magistrate adjourned the for seven days.
