Wairarapa v. Englishmen. Dowson Has a Picnic. Countrymen's Dull Procession
(Per Press Association) Gbeytown Noeth, Wednesday. Magnificent weather was again experienced for the Becond day ol the match Wairarapa v. Lord Hawke's team. Piay was resumed at 11 a m.. when Dowson and .Leatham, with respective totals standing at 52 and 5, went to the wicket. Just after play commenced Dowson sent up an easy catch, which was missed, and a few minutes later gave another opportunity to the fieldsman, which was not accepted. Several changes in the bowling were made, but proved fruitless, and the pair continued to rattla up the score for half-an-hour. Leatham again gave a chance, which Baillie accepted, when the total stood— 244—7—26. Fane partnered Dowson, whose score was 87, and soon mci eased the score till the third century was reached. Shortly afterwards Dow?o-a was given a third life through the in- ' ability of Swan to accept an easy catcV, The local bowlers were put to a teaf, every available one being tried, but Dawson and Fane defied them all and continued to rapidly increase the total, banging the ball in .all directions. The bowling was changed andrecbanged, but without avail, both playing brilliant cricket. The luncheon adjournment saw 405 on the board, when the Englishmen declared their innings closed with a lead of 200 over Wairarapa. Additional scores:—Leatham 26, Fane (not out) 26, Dowson (not out) 218. Dowßon's score included 17 fours, one three, .five fives, six sixes, six twos, and the rest einglea. He was at the wicket an henr and 40 minutes. The Wairarapa innings was a dull procession, and concluded for 119, the Jatter being bsaten by an innings and 91 runs.
