The Launch In Distress.

CfIKiSTCEOEca, July 2. The Rotomahana, with the Ellrtt Ballance in tow, reached Lyttelton at 8.15 p.m.
She sighted the launch ad 2.30 a.m., about 12 miles off Kaikoura. A strong: south-west gale was blowing, with a* heavy sea, and the launch was in serious* difficulties, and making sigaals of distress. The Rotomahana stoo<? by, and succeeded in getting a rope to the launch! about 4.20. She. then towed her to> Kaikoura, which was reached at 10151. Here, the wire hawser was substituted! for rope, and the tow continued to* Lyttelton. The launch had lost her compass..
Tbe Nile was seen some miles further out when ihe Ellen Ballance was pic&ed up, and seemed all right. She put into Kaikoura at 4 p.m.
The Eotomahana left on her interrupted journey about 10 o'clock.
