MORE CANADIAN PROGRESS
STRONG ENEMY OPPOSITION. LONDON, Jan. 4. Canadians of the Eighth Army have made more progress northwest of Ravenna in spite of strong opposition.
Tho Germans brought up Tiger and Panther tanks to support their battered infantry. British tanks took up the challenge and a violent tank battle followed. The Canadians advanced more than 3000 yards. "Eighth Army troops north-west of Ravenna further progressed east of Fossovecchio against strong resistance," states an Allied communique from Italy. "Four determined counterattacks were repulsed Patrolling occurred on both sides of the Fifth Army front."
An Official Wireless message says very strong forces of Tactical Air Force fighter-bombers yesterday operated against the rail and road network leadirfg to the Italian battle area and gun positions, strong-points and troop concentrations opposite the Fifth and Eighth Armies' lines. Medium and light bombers bombed rail bridges and ammunition dumps and attacked Ger-man-occupied buildings in North-West-crn Italy. Balkan Air Force fighter and light bombers flew intruder and armed reconnaissance missions over Northern Italy on Tuesday night. From these operations nine aircraft are missing. The Allies flew about 1300 sorties.
