TOWN SURROUNDED
FIGHT FOR CERVARO
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 12 The latest messages from Algiers state that the Allied Command in Italy does not confirm the report that the Fifth Army has captured Cervaro, which remains the central point of ' enemy resistance. The German News Agency to-night reported street fighting in Cervaro. Allied correspondents state that the town is practically surrounded and its fall is" expected at any moment. Stiff fighting- is in progress for high ground overlooking Cervaro, says Reuter's correspondent. British and American infantry thrusting south from the main road have now reached Monte Troccliio. The thaw is setting in along tho front, causing rivers to rise. The ground conditions arc again hindering operations. The Germans crossed tho Garigliano south-east of Castel Forte and established themselves in houses. Our troops immediately counter-attacked and drove the enemy back across the river. •
Active patrolling is reported from the Eighth Army front, where the artillery is also busy.
