DESPERATE NAZI DEFENCE. LONDON, Jan. 12. The Fifth Army is blasting its way forward towards Cassino from three directions. The 'Allies are about four miles away to the east, where the fighting is exceptionally severe. South of Cassino the Americans are reported to be three miles away, but. a correspondent says, they will be three miles of tough fighting. South-West of Cassino the British are five miles off. The Germans are fighting • back fiercely everywhere to defend this important town on the road to Rome.
