NEW WEAPONS

AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURE. (Special Australian Correspondent.) SYDNEY, Jan. 11.

New weapons now being made by Commonwealth munitions plants include an Australian designed 25pounder pack howitzer, 17-pounder anti-tank guiij a 4\n naval gun for defensive arming of merchant shipping, Hispano 20 mm. cannon for aircraft mounting and a new heavy 4.2 in mortar for use in New Guinea. Other newer weapons not yet in use by the Allied armies will be made later. The manufacture of considerable new equipment in the present transition of Australian war" industry from defensive to offensive armaments is revealed by the special correspondent of tho Sydney Morning Herald. In South-West Pacific skies Boomerangs and Beaufort aircraft arc being superseded by newer, faster, and moro powerful types, including the Bcaufighler. Tho foundations are also being laid for a long-range programme of heavy liomber and aero engine construction. Other announced new items of Australian ordnance production include invasion craft, coastal ships, marino, Diesel, and petrol engines, as well as railway locomotives, and rolling stock, agricultural machinery for increasing food production, and a wider range of automotive parts.
