PAPATAWA.
Tho August meeting of the Papatawa Women's Institute was held on Friday, Mrs Kay 11. Morgan (vice-president) presiding over a good attendance. The roll-call imposed u|>on each member the task of making a three-minute impromptu speech, the subject of which was unknown to the speaker until drawn by ballot. Every member responded, and the result was highly diverting. The golden thread was taken up by Mrs Gleadow. who related "The Story of the Willow Pattern." Tho competition." the making of a tin of shortbread for soldiers' parcels, resulted: Senior section. Mis Parker 1; junior. Miss Juno Sage 1. The hostesses were Mrs W. .Harding and Misses Goldsworthy and Sage. The subject of next month's competition is girdle scones. . The Southern Hawkcs Bay Cull Drive At-sociation is to commence the season with a stock drive on Friday, August. 8. A patriotic ball is to take place at 1 apatawa on Monday night under the auspices of the local branch of the Patric-tic Society. Arrangements have been made in keeping with good patronage which is anticipated.
