CARE OF SICK
HOSPITAL BOARD MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Hoard was held yesterday, Mr J. A. Nash presiding. Also present were Messrs A. Jfi. Mansford, V. E. Smith, J. Hodgcns, M.P., J. Boyce, J. Butchelar, M. E. Perreau, G. A. Monk, W. Howell, T. Green, J. H.' Williamson, C. P. Jensen and A. J. Giniblett.
Hi the course of his report the medical superintendent (Mr J. H. North) stated that during the month two of the house surgeons, Drs. J. It. D. Eaton and J. M. Stewart were required by the Army for overseas service. They were released from June 30 and arrangements made for the appointment of Mr E. J. Velvin and Mr S. deC. Barclay as relieving house surgeons. “It is anticipated that the house surgeon staff will remain at its present strength until the end of tlio year,” tho report added. Dr. J. N. Armour, who has been on the staff for two and a-half years, was released for overseas service; his appointment terminated on June 30. 'this brings our resident staff to the previous strength of one resident medical officer and five house surgeons. In regard to the relieving house surgeons, representations have been made to the Health Department about temporary registration. This is essential for the efficient working ot the Hospital and 1 would recommend the board to make further representations to the department in this matter.” It was decided that further representations be made. The board considered the question of proceeding with the Nurses' Home building and it was reported that certain difficulties which had arisen in connection with supplies for this had now been overcome and that it was hoped to proceed in the immediate future.
In His report the managing-secretary (Mr A. J. Phillipps) stated that the contractor on tho Centennial Hospital continued to make good progress. The medical superintendent and the managing-secretary had discussed details in connection with the outpatient blCT'k with the officers of the Health Department, and the matter had reached the stage where the draft plans were being prepared. The draft layout for tho tutorial block had been agreed to by the department and detailed plans in connection with this block were now being put in hand. Tho additions and alterations to the nursery at Otaki Hospital had been completed. The result was a vcry considerable improvement to the facilities available.
The following gifts received during June were acknowledged by the matron (Miss L. M. Banks) : Books, weekly papers and journals from Mrs Bradley (Levin), tho Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs K Bockett (Raumni), Mrs Drake (Fcatbcrston Street); two bed-jackets and a jar cf jam from the loca! branch of the Women’s Division oi tho Farmers’ Union; race tickets for the use of the nursing staff from the president of tho Manawatu Hunt Club.
