PRIMARY SCHOOLS.
WANGANUI BOARD’S MEETING. Mr E. F. Hemingway was in the chair at a meeting of tho Wanganui Education Board yesterday, when tho secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) reported on tile proposed extensions to tho Bulls School. He said that tho present location of the school was not a good one, the land being heavy and wet and exposed to cold winds. He suggested that stops be taken to acquire, a new site in a drier portion of the town. The board authorised the secretary to negotiate for the purchase of a site of four or five acres. The department notified a special grant to include the erection of a staff room in the building work about to be undertaken at Linton. A tender of £297 18s Od was accepted for fencing at the Palmerston North Intermediate School. In regard to the asphalting repairs that aro to be carried out at tho Hokowhitu School, for which a grant lias been obtained from tbo department, the architect (Mr E. It. Hodge) recommended that the work be not started at the present time on account of tho state of the ground. It was decided to subsidise the Russell Street Committee in regard to the ground improvements carried ouE On the recommendation of the architect, it was decided not to accede to the request of the Foxton District High School committee for an application for the painting of a fence. Tho matter of heating the Manchester Street School, was left to the architect. A tender of £ll2 was accepted for the painting of the Manual Training Centre at Palmerston North.
The Intermediate School Committee mado an application for a grant of £IOO for the establishment of a school library. Tho senior inspector, in a report. suggested a "rant of £5. Mr W. H. Brown stated that a nucleus was desired to start a fund. The school had a fine library room and needed books to fill it, especially n reference section. So far, only fiction books had been received. It was decided to adopt tho inspector’s report. A report was received from the senior inspector regarding a proposed circulating library scheme for country schools. It was decided to leave tho matter in tho hands of the secretary, if the country library service did not cover the needs of the'schools.
The following resignations were received: —Mr C. Tunnicliffe, sole teacher, Tiritoa; Miss 8. F. Slater, assistant mistress, Palmerston North Central; Miss H. Parnell, member of relieving staff; Miss N. Botaroff, relieving staff. Teachers appointed to other positions in board’s service; Miss Jl. E. Catherwood, assistant mistress, College Street.
