HEROIC SHEPHERD.
AIR RAIL) INCIDENT. (British Official Wireless.) (flee. 2.1-5 p. - m.) RUGBS , May 30An official description is given oi how a shepherd won the British Empire Medal. Lred Mitchell is the shepherd, says the Ministry ot Information. Lie' is 45 years of age and has been head shepherd on a North Somerset estate for ten years. On January 3 this year lie was looking after some lambing ewes at 0.30 p.m. when an air raid was made. 4 housands ol incendiary bombs were dropped and five actually tell on the lambing pens sheltering 34 ewes and lambs. I lie pie ns. which were made out of wattle hurdles and straw, in a few seconds were blazing from end to end. Mr Mitchell, who was alone, tried to put out the tire, but had to give up when it reached one of the ewes and a lamb. Lie picked iifi the lamb and carried it to safety with its mother following close behind. Mr Mitchell eventually got out every sheep and lamb through the flames.
