CONSTERNATION IN SOUTH.
ALL-ROUND DISSATISFACTION. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 24. Consternation at the severity of the meat restrictions was expressed this morning by officials of the Canterbury freezing works, who said the South Island had been made to suffer at the expense of the North Island, where ewe killings are far in advance because of the earlier season. Fears of short-time in the works may lead to a protest to the Government by unionists. Farmers say Mr Barclay's statement is unsatisfactory and too late, as they are heavily committed by purchases at the ewe fairs and have insufficient feed to carry the export ewes over.
