MEAT KILLINGS.
EFFECT OF RESTRICTIONS. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, March 24: Freezing company officials interviewed to-day said the effect of the ! restrictions would be a postponement of the killing of certain classes of stock. In the meantime most plants find they have enough to do killing lambs. The obvious thing to do, it was stated, was to kill the animals that would go back in condition quickly—that was lambs. Another official thought that in respect of wethers and ewes the back of the season had been more than broken in the North Island, hence the effect on his company appeared not to be serious. In a telephone interview from Darfield to-day, Mr W. W. Mulholland. president of the Farmers' Union, said the effect would be felt more severely in the South Island, where the digester and canning capacity was less than in the North Island, and the feed position was far worse and in some places desperate. In some districts it would not be possible to hold the stock on the farms and some action would have to be taken to allow the meat to go into the cool store, even if it had to be removed later. Canterbury had not the digester capacity to handle old ewes due for killing, and they could not be fed ;' they must be got off the farms in the next two months and this was presumably now the Government's responsibility. In the North Island the feed position was more satisfactory and the decree would not cause general hardship. Mr Mulholland urged immediate action to meet the position next season. The digester and canning capacity in the South Island should be increased, because next year the restrictions would probably be in Jorce throughout the year.
