AEROPLANE SUPPLIES
AMERICAN OFFER. LESS THAN DESIRED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 14, 9.25 a.m. WASHINGTON, Aug. 13. Mr A. Purvis (Chief of the British Purchasing Commission), has announced that the United States has offered to sell Britain 1300 to 1400 planes a month, beginning late in 1941. 'Mr Purvis said .the offer was made in data submitted by Mr W. Knudsen (Chief Industrial Co-ordinator) and was in the nature of a counter-offer to the British moves to obtain 3000 planes a month. “We arc considering carefully the data and are endeavouring to work out a project,’-’ lie said. “The offer had been made after the consideration of America’s own defence needs.” DEFENCE OF NEW YORK. A message from Newport (Rhode Island) says that, following the visit of President Roosevelt and Colonel F Knox (Secretary to the Navy), it is reported the navy is considering transforming Newport (which is situated strategically at the entrance to Long Island Sound) into a “Gibraltar for the defence of New York.” It is understood the plans provide for the construction of two forts protecting the harbour where part of the Atlantic. Fleet can be based.
