CONQUEST OF ETHIOPIA.
BRITISH ATTITUDE STATED. (British Official Wireless.) Received August 14, 11.10 a.m. RUGBY, Aug. 13. The Government’s attitude towards the position of Haile Selassie and recognition of the Italian conquest of Abyssinia was stated in the House of Lords to-day by Lord Caldccoto (Dominions Secretary), who said the Government had let it be known that, in view of Italy’s act of deliberate aggression in resorting to war against this country, it felt entitled to reserve complete liberty ol action in regard to any commitments entered into in the past .with the Italian Government relating to North and East African and the Mediterranean areas.
This declaration covered de jure recognition under the Anglo-Italian Agreement of 1938 of Italy’s conquest of Abyssinia. He stated that the Government attached full importance to the question of recognising Haile Selassie as the lawful ruler of Abyssinia and the possibility of giving him assistance to overthrow'the Italian aggressor and reoccupy the Throne.
