NO “PROTECTION.”
NETHERLANDS’ ATTITUDE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, April 20. The acting-Consul General for Japan (Mr Nakaiuji) has received a- cablegram from the Japanese Foreign Office containing the following statement by the spokesman of the Foreign Office at Tokio: — “We have received a report from our Minister at The Hague (Mr ltaro lshii) as follows: ‘The Minister (Air Ishii) called on the Netherlands foreign Minister (M. Van Kleffens) on April 16 and explained the attitude of the Japanese Government with regard to the question of the Netherlands East Indies. M. Van Kleffens expressed the Netherlands Government’s appreciation of the Japanese Government’s attitude, and at the same time stated that the Netherlands Government had not sought nor would 6eek in future any country’s protection of the Netherlands East Indies, and that the Netherlands Government was determined to refuse any offer of protection or intervention of any kind which might bo made by any country.’ The Netli.erla.nds Minister at Tokio (General J. C. Pabst) called on Mr Arita and confirmed the above report from Air Ishii.”
