(From Our Own Correspondent.) HALCOMBE, .March 19. At tlie euchre and dance party held by the Tennis Club euchre prizes were won by Mrs O. Petersen 1, Mrs X. Prior 2, Mr !!. Wilson 1, and Mr W. McLennan 2. Mr E. W. Cowdrey was M.C. Anions those present were Mosdames E. W. Low- ; drey, D. C. Majiagh, l‘\ Cowdrey, K. i Managh, J. McKinnon. R. Williams, 0. Petersen, Misses It. Managh, I. Miles, V. Judd, -J. 'J'liow, E. Fergusson, D. McNac, T. Old, N. Old, J. McNac. T. NofTkc, J. Foster. M. Anderson, and P. Williams. Mi- and Mrs E. It. Long are the guests of Mr and Mrs C. C. Bleakley. Mr G. •ludd is an inmate of the Palmerston North Hospital. Mrs .Burgess, wnr., ban had to enter hospital in Feilding. Mrs C. Abbiss lias returned from a. holiday spent, at Titalii Bay. There was an excellent attendance of members at the annual meeting of the 1 la.lcombo Women’s Institute. Mrs B. C. Managh presided. Three new members were welcomed, Mosdames L. Duflin and R. J. Managh and Miss P. Fergusson. while four visitors were present, three of whom attended the A.(..WAV. Conference with the lialeonibe delegate. Misses 0. Fergusson and J. Tiiow undertook the duties of sunshine members. The hostesses; for April are Mosdames A. Stone, A. Ward, D. C. Managh and Miss D. Field. Mesda-mes Ashworth ami Budding are to attend the Oroua Council meeting as delegates. A vole of thanks was accorded Miss Elsie Fergusson, who made and staged tlie Halcombe entry in the Feeding Horticultural Show. Members were not in favour of sending a delegate to the conference at Wellington in July. It was decided to send four parcels to the soldiers. The birthday to he held in April is to take the form of a euchre and dance. Miss Edna Fergusson promised to make the* cake and Miss Flls.'e Fergusson lo ice it. The report was read by the secretary. In thanking Mrs Ashworth for her report, Mrs Managh spoke of Hie valuable work and assistance, given so cheerfully and willingly by her and called on Mrs Ashworth to accept a heautifu' crystal vase as a token of appreciation lor all she had done in the past two years as secretary. The points prizes won durinj. 11 10 year were presented to the succcssfu. entrants. A small gift was presented tc Miss B. Field as Press reporter. The election of officers resulted: President. Mrs R. G Managh, L. G. Fergusson, and Miss 0. Fergusson: Press reporter, Miss B. Field. The hostesses were Mcsdair.es G. Nicol, R. Budding, A. McNae and Miss 0. Fergusson. Tile report stated tlial the year closed with a membership this being an increase of three on last year’s tofal. Tile balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £8 19s which was considered most satisfactory. r ihc year had been a successful one, and though ai limes international happenings had cast a shadow', the work generally had proceeded smoothly. “Wo were unfortunate in losing our very popular and capable president, Mrs W. Once more wd have been able tc give assistance to others less fortuna-.o than ourselves, firstly by combining with the local Health Camp Committee in catering for the health camp concert and dance, and. secondly, by making our yearly appeal to members for assistance lo the Makogai lepers.” The report records social happenings throughout the year. 'the points prizes wore won by Mrs J. E. Fergusson (cookery), with 12 points, and Mrs L. Bavics (needlework or novelty) with 18 points. Prizes for the most consistent entries were wen by Miss Edna Fergusson with eight entries (possible, eight) in the cookery section and by Mrs Seliaeren and Miss Elsie Fergusson, who each had ' seven entries, in the needlework section.
