CARNARVON

(From Our Own Correspondent.) CARNARVON? March 19. Miss Maxwell, of Fcathenston, is visiting her patents, Mr and Mrs 11. Maxwell. The friends of Mrs MeKcivie will be pleased to bear her mother is progressing satisfactorily after an operation. Mr and MUs Clare have returned from a visit to Wellington. Mrs Warren, Mrs Teague and Misses Teague, also Mr and Mrs J. Scott, and Mr Luxford have been visiting Wellington. At a meeting called by the School Committee, Mr Mansell, who was ill the chair, explained that it was desired to ei nsidcr ways and means of raising money lo provide a basketball and drill area. Several plans wore discussed and it was decided to take round a subscription list. The area has been prepared by subsidised labour and it is imperative that the tar-sealing be proceeded with immediately or it will revert to weeds. The dental clinic was discussed and it. is expected to be in operation very soon. The Women's Institute held their annual meeting recently, Mrs Gibbons presiding. It was agreed to send two patriotic parcels at present. Mrs Sandcrcock kindly offered to buy the articles, members to divide the cost. Mrs Gibbons also offered lo make Ihe (wo cakes to be included. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with Mrs Will in the loss of a relative. Mrs Will was nominated for the federation executive. Mcsdames Warren and G. R. McKenzie were appointed delegates to (he council meeting. Mrs Knight (Mangorci Institute), Misses Keith (Masterton), Maxwell (l'eatherston) and Mcsdames Collins and Caverhill (Rongotea) were welcomed as visitors. Mcsdames Collins and Oavcrhill, members of the federation executive, expressed their pleasure at being present and also with the bright and happy spirit of the meeting. They judged the competitions, which resulted: Bloom, Miss Clare 1, Mrs Knight 2 and 3; vase of flowers, Miss Clare 1, Mrs Gibbons and Mrs Florence, equal, 2; senior mending, Mrs N. Scott 1, Mrs Gibbons 2, Mrs Florence 3: junior (Mrs Gibbons's special). Miss Gibbons 1; knitted socks, Mrs Will 1, Mrs Gibbons 2; points prize for year. Mrs Gibbons, 41 points; junior (Miss Glares special). Miss Gibbons, 21 points; bloom (Mrs Wills’s special). Miss Clare, 46 points. Mrs N. Scott informed members how to procure tins for packing parcels for -soldiers. The secretary and treasurer. in presenting the annual report, stated there was a very satisfactory balance; she also thanked (Mr McKenzie for auditing the books. Indicating members’ confidence in and appreciation of their president’s work and interest, she had been re-elected unopposed. The following is the new committee: Mcsdames Gibbons (president), I*. Scott (secretary and treasurer), Florence, Knight, N. Scott. Sandcrcock. Warren. Thomson, and Misses Clare, Borne and Will. It. is the intentiou of the institute to help in the best, way possible with patriotic work. The following programme was decided for April: Bloom, two carrots, and mop head-making: hostesses. Mrs Knight and Misses Gennills and Gibbons.. Mrs P. Scott is donating a trophy for points for the year in the best bloom class. Miss D. Woolford was welcomed as a member In her report the president said the year had been a very successful one and she thanked all who had contributed to that end, especially the committee and the secretary. The report also traced institute activities throughout the year, particulars of which have already been published.
