MARTON, July 29. When tlic Minister of Housing (Hon. H. T. Armstrong) visited Marton to inspect State houses iie gave an assurance that the town would receive its share of these dwellings. A formal gathering was held in tho Borough Council Chambers, where the Minister met representatives of tho Marton Chamber of Commerce and tho Mayor (Mr F. Purnell). Accompanying tho Minister were the Director of Housing Construction (Mr A. Tyndall) and the district inspector of tho Housing Department (Mr A. P. Stevens, of Palmerston North). It was explained that twenty State houses were already occupied in Morton, and 15 more were in the course of construction. Mr Tyndall said that for tho 15 houses there were 50 applications. The Minister referred to tho shortage of skilled builders and artisans, and said difficulty was being experienced in. securing tenders. However, they were prepared to purchase more land in Morton and keep the local builders employed.
