PROTEST VOICED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 23. Reports of happenings at a “hardup” hall hold in the Town Hall last week were considered at a recent meeting of the combined temperance societies of Auckland, and it was decided to make a vigorous protest and to communicate with the various organisations and persons concerned. A resolution was adopted: meeting of members of the New land Alliance and temperance societies of Auckland strongly protests against the alleged disgraceful drunken orgy winch took place in the Auckland I own Hall on the occasion of the ‘hard-up ball It is reported that, contrary to the law and to the conditions governing the letting of the hall, liquor bars were installed arid large quantities or liquor were sold, also that numbers ot those present became absolutely drunk, that disgusting scenes took place, and that the hall was left m a filthy condition. It, therefore, urges that those responsible be prosecuted and that instructions bo given that the use or the hall he refused for any similar gathering in the future.” ■ . In a covering letter conveying this resolution to the town clerk, the secretarv of the New Zealand Alliance (Mr L. E. Falkncr) asks that the letter and resolution bo considered by the City Council. He states that Ins council considers that the City Council should discountenance such methods or raising funds for the Centennial memorial by refusing to accept any stuns so raised, and that instructions be issued making it impossible for the hall to he used for any such function m future. A persual of the conditions governing the letting ot the hall has icvealcd that no provision has been made for the printed conditions regarding the use of intoxicating liquor. He adds: “It is, therefore, urged that in future intoxicating liquor be strictly prohibited from the Town Hall and its Pr The C aliiance is taking up tho subject of the conduct of the ball not only with the Citv Council, hut also with the police, Minister of Justico, members of Cabinet, representatives of Churches, and the Commercial Travellers Association, who organised tho gathering in aid of the Mayor’s Centennial Lund.
