WINTRY WEATHER
COLD RAIN EXPERIENCED. SNOW, ’ FALLS AT APITI. "Wintry weather was experienced in the city and district over the weekend, heavy falls of rain causing sodden underluol conditions. Headings taken at the Boys’ High School show that in the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday .345 in of rain was recorded, and at 9 a.in. to-day the reading was .270 in., making a total of .GLoin. for the 48 hours, in the J2 days of this month there has been recorded a total of 1.49 in. Saturday remained relatively line, though dull, until‘the afternoon, when heavy showers swept the district and drove the crowds under cover at the National Dairy Show. The early part of the evening was starlit, but later rain again fell, some of the' showers being heavy. Thunder was experienced at places. Sunday dawned with heavy ram, and intermittent showers were experienced throughout the rest of the day, some of these being heavy also. Further rain fell during the night. At about 5.30 p.rn. yesterday a fairIv severe electrical storm broke oyer the Makerua area, causing dislocation in the power supply. At 5.10 a.in. there were three brief stoppages of power throughout the ManawatuOroua Power Board’s district owiilg to failures in the Government supply. At "Wanganui flooding occurred ill the low-lying areas and heavy rain squalls were experienced, together with thunder and lightning, on Saturday night. Snow was falling at Apiti this morning at 8 o’clock, this being the first fall of tho winter. Heavy rain was experienced last night, and tho wet conditions. together with the fact that the fall to-day was light, indicated that the snow would not lie for long, ft is understood that it extended as far down as the Kimbolton area.
