LAST NIGHT’S SPORTS.
Athletic and cycling sports on the Recreation Ground, last evening, marked the opening of the local physical fitness week. The programme was an excellent one, including more items than usual with evening gatherings. The various events were got off promptly, thanks to the manner in which the officials discharged their duties. There was a large attendance of the public, and spectators were treated to excellent sport, as a number of the events were very keenly contested, and finishes were very close. This was especially the case "in the principal cycling race, won by F. Wilson, of Dannevirke, there being very little to spare lx:tween the placed men. There were eleven competitors. The chief running event was annexed by J. McTntyre, of Dannevirke, who had a comfortable w T in. The track was in excellent order. The secretarial duties were .as usual, ablv carried out by Mr W. G. Butler. At" the close of the programme the Mayor (Mr R. R. Johnston) addressed the' gathering in regard to the programme for Fitness Week, in which he expressed the hope that the campaign would prove very successful. He reminded the public of the various attractions, and especialy the special parade. Results of the events are as follow : CYCLING. Half mile (senior). —W. Burlaee (90 yds) 1, M. Vowell (100) 2. R.
